ILUMAN HATS

WISDOM AND TRADITION

In the Parroquia de San Juan de Ilumán traditional sheep wool hats are made for the Quechua peoples: Otavalo, Kayambi, Saraguro and Natabuela. Each model has different characteristics allowing the identification of which indigenous people each person belongs to. The use of hats constitutes part of the indigenous culture, as it is part of the daily apparel of both men and women. From the worldview of the taitas (parents), the hat signifies ‘wisdom’. Therefore, children do not use it daily, but only during special ceremonies.
